Children's Services


To register for a Children's program using your own device, please locate the event in the online event calendar on the Library's homepage, click the "Register" button and submit the online form. You may also call 248-7363 ext 4 OR you can register in person in the Children's Room. Preference will be given to SRPL card holders.

Craft and Food Programs fill up quickly. Please register as soon as possible for these programs. We do not maintain "waitlists" for our programs.

For programs such as Tots Night Out, etc. siblings are welcome but the craft/activity is for the registered child only.

Programs require that participants be within a certain age range, these guidelines are used to ensure a pleasant experience for all participants. Age requirements will be enforced; thank you for understanding.

Please be advised if you are 7 or more minutes late for a program/event you may not be able to participate and your spot will go to a standby participant.


1000 Books Before Kindergarten


The Shelter Rock Public Library Children's Room invites you and your child to join the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program. This free program encourages you to read 1000 books before your child starts kindergarten - a goal experts say children need to help them learn to read. If you read just one book a day for a year that equals 365 books, 730 books in two years, and 1095 in three years!

  • Ongoing registration is for families with children from birth through age 5 not yet enrolled in kindergarten.
  • A book can be read more than once; repeated reading of favorite books is encouraged!
  • To sign up visit the Children's Room and pick up your book log. After logging 100 books your child will receive a prize and reading log for the next 100 books.
  • Upon completion of the program your child will receive a special certificate. 


Great Beginnings

greatThis program of stories, simple songs, fingerplays, and rhymes is designed for children ages 12-23 months with a parent or caregiver.

Choose one of the following sessions:

Session One, Mondays at 10:15 AM; September 10 - October 1

Session Two, Thursdays at 10:15 AM; September 13 - October 4

Toddler Storytime

small girl readingDesigned for toddlers 2-3 1/2 with a parent or caregiver as a program of stories, simple songs, fingerplays and rhymes with other toddlers and their parents. 

Choose one of the following sessions:

Session One: Tuesdays, 10:15 AM, September 11 - October 9

Session Two: Wednesdays, 11:15 AM, September 12 - October 10

Preschool Storytime

storytime2Designed for children ages 3-5, this is a program of stories, simple songs, fingerplays and rhymes with other preschoolers. Please note: Tuesday Preschool is for children only but the parent/caregiver must remain in the building.

Session Two: Fridays, 10:15 AM, September 7 - October 5

Tots Night Out

Families with children ages 2-5 years are invited to participate in a program of songs, stories and a craft.

playhoorayFamilies with children ages 18 months to 4 years are invited to participate in a fun-filled program of music and movement. PlayHooray is designed to provide a chance for you and your babies & toddlers to sing, dance, and play together with other families.

Jump for Joy

Halloween Pumpkin Decorating

pumpkin decoration 9Children in grades K-5 are invited to decorate pumpkins with teen volunteers and enjoy a pumpkin snack.

Halloween Fun

Spooktacular Halloween Fun at Theme Parks bd5db38a2eef4a8fa4e478bca2cf71e9Chidren in grades 3-5 will join the teens to package snack items collected for families at the local Ronald McDonald House New Hyde Park. After the packaging, the teens will help the children make pumpkin Halloween Tic Tac Toe Games for families at the Ronald McDonald House. Children that participate will earn one hour of community service.

Saturday, October 13th from 1-2 PM


printable halloween tic tac booTeens will play Pumpkin Tic Tac Toe with children in Grades Pre-K to 2 and read a Halloween picture book to them. Then they will share a simple fall snack. Children are welcome to come to this story and game time in their Halloween costumes.

Saturday, October 13th from 2-3 PM
