1000 Books Before Kindergarten

1000BooksLogo

The Shelter Rock Public Library Children's Room invites you and your child to join the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program. This free program encourages you to read 1000 books before your child starts kindergarten - a goal experts say children need to help them learn to read. If you read just one book a day for a year that equals 365 books, 730 books in two years, and 1095 in three years!

  • Ongoing registration is for families with children from birth through age 5 not yet enrolled in kindergarten.
  • A book can be read more than once; repeated reading of favorite books is encouraged!
  • To sign up visit the Children's Room and pick up your book log. After logging 100 books your child will receive a prize and reading log for the next 100 books.
  • Upon completion of the program your child will receive a special certificate.

Looking Ahead to Summer 2018

Join us this summer as we celebrate reading! We encourage children and their families to participate in our Summer Reading Programs to help maintain their reading skills. This year, the theme for the Summer Reading Program for children entering Grades 1-5 as of September is Libraries Rock! Preschoolers, Kindergartners and their families are encouraged to join the Little Rockers Read-to-Me Program. Registration for all participants will begin Monday, June 11th. Children may begin recording the titles of books read on Monday, June 25th and may record until Monday, August 6th. Additional information about our upcoming programs can be found at the library. Hope to see you here soon!

Postcard Pageant

Are you traveling this summer? Send us a postcard! Whether you are traveling to Manhattan for the day or Madagascar for a month, we would love to hear from you. Send us a postcard with one fact you learned about the place you visited. Be sure to sign your name (do not include your address or phone number). You can send us as many postcards as you like but they must be different places. You may also bring the postcards to the library when you return from your travels. The postcards will be on display through the summer in the Children's Room. At the end of the summer one random postcard will be selected to win a prize. Happy Travels!
